Over 1600 years ago, Polynesians from the Marquesas Islands were the first to migrate and settle the islands, navigating against winds and currents in double canoes. In contrast, early Greek mariners preferred to stay near coastlines.

Caelestis is Latin, meaning “heavenly, coming from the sky, the blue color of the sky”. It’s an appropriate name for a sailing vessel located in the Hawaiian Islands because by observing the stars, the winds and the shape of ocean swells, Polynesian explorers navigated for thousands of miles without charts or instruments.

They sailed against prevailing winds and currents aboard double canoes to settle the Hawaiian Islands.  Comparatively, while early Polynesian explorers were leaving the sight of land in their wake, Greek mariners stayed close to the comfort of the coastlines.

Captain Matt

Captain Matt hails from Missouri, the “Show Me State.”

His sailing journey began in 1995 in San Diego Bay after he joined the Navy Nurse Corps, and he has been sailing the Pacific Ocean ever since. When asked what brought him to Hawaii, he proudly says with a smile and a shaka, “The wind!” He sailed to Hawaii just as the Polynesians did centuries ago.

With over 15,000 nautical miles logged, Matt has completed seven transpacific crossings and sailed to some of the most isolated spots in the Pacific, including Tarawa, Abemama, and Palmyra.

He is highly knowledgeable about sailing the Hawaiian Islands and enjoys enhancing each charter with insights into Hawaiian history and the islands’ creation by Pele, the goddess of volcanoes and fire.
